is a Japanese tradition that traces back to a Chinese story about two stars who are basically the original star crossed lovers. Orihime and Hikoboshi get separated by the entire Milky Way, which makes a long distance relationship seem like a walk in the park. But once a year on the seventh day of the seventh month, they get to meet, and that is what this celebration is all about. On July 7, 2026, there will be a event somewhere in or near San Diego, so you can celebrate their reunion without having to travel across a galaxy.
The whole thing happens outdoors, so you will be enjoying the summer sun while pretending to care about astronomy. There will be games, performances, crafts, and food, all aimed at being kid friendly but totally fine for adults who still like making things with paper and glue. Basically it is a low key excuse to hang out, eat something grilled, and stare at the sky knowing that somewhere up there two stars are having a much better night than you are. No need to bring a telescope, just bring yourself and maybe a wish written on a strip of paper if that is your thing.
